Vava'u is a year-round destination — but the two seasons offer very different experiences. Whale season (July–October) is peak time, when humpback whales fill the warm waters of Vava'u and Neiafu comes alive. Shoulder and off-peak months are quieter, cheaper, and perfect for diving, sailing, and island exploration.
Mokotu House sits in Neiafu — the main town of Vava'u and the hub of everything. Local markets, restaurants, whale watching and whale swim tour operators, dive shops, sailing charters, and the famous Port of Refuge Harbour are all within easy reach. Neiafu is the gateway to Vava'u's 60+ islands, world-class snorkelling, sea kayaking, and the most famous humpback whale encounters in the Pacific.

Mokotu House is located in Neiafu — the departure point for virtually every licensed whale watching and whale swim operator in Vava'u. Humpback whale season runs July to October. You can walk to tour operator offices and harbour departure points within minutes. We strongly recommend booking accommodation as early as possible — Neiafu fills quickly during peak whale season.
Southern humpback whales migrate to the warm sheltered waters of Vava'u each year between late June and late October. The peak of the season — when sightings are most frequent — is typically July, August and September. Tonga is one of the only places in the world where you can legally swim with humpback whales, and Vava'u is the best island group in Tonga for whale encounters. Demand for Neiafu accommodation in these months is extremely high.

Most travellers fly via Nadi, Fiji (Fiji Airways) or via Auckland, New Zealand to Tongatapu (Fua'amotu International Airport), then connect on Real Tonga Airlines to Vava'u (Lupepau'u Airport). The airport is approximately 20–30 minutes from Neiafu township and Mokotu House. Flying via Nadi or Auckland typically gives the most reliable connections during whale season.
Vava'u is one of the Pacific's most activity-rich destinations beyond whale watching. From Neiafu you can access scuba diving and snorkelling at world-class coral gardens and sea caves, sailing and yacht charters through 60+ islands, deep sea fishing (marlin, mahi-mahi), sea kayaking, game fishing, village cultural tours, Mt Talau National Park hiking, and some of the finest local seafood restaurants in the Pacific.
